From the “Beau Geste” to the Lesson. The Representative Dimension in Interaction

Based on a rereading of the essay on “Le Beau geste”—a text derived from Greimas' notes finalized for the 1991-92 EHESS seminar presentation—the article develops a theory of the actants of representation, showing that such an approach to the simulacra of subjects is in its embryonic stage in the essay “Le défi.” Starting from simulacra as objects of value circulating in an unconventional way, the article shows the limitations of the examples on which the considerations on the “beautiful gesture” are based, because the three micro-narratives that were chosen to grasp its nature contain, in fact, a sequence that opposes it to the “lesson.” In order to take into account all the oppositions that determine the identity of the beautiful gesture, and in line with Hjelmslev's intuition in La catégorie des cas, the article concludes by proposing a three-dimensional tensional model.
