The Wordplay (albur): A Catalytic Text in Mexican Popular Culture

Mexican wordplay, albur, has been studied from various perspectives, but not from the Semiotics of Culture. In this work, we analyze it through Iuri Lotman’s theoretical approach, using the concepts of semiosphere, boundary, and catalyst text. We present a review of previous research on albur to establish the need for a semiotic approach; subsequently, a description of the problems it presents on its placement into the
semiosphere; the processes that speakers experience when using it at the boundaries of signification it entails; and the characterization of its structure as a generator of new semiosis. We conclude that the albur is a catalyst text of Mexican popular culture that allows for the renewal of its structure through the generation of new possibilities of semiosis.
