Power in the Cultural Constitution of Semiotic Space

This article explores the epistemological commitments of power in the semiotics of culture, focusing on Iuri Lotman's semiosphere. The semiosphere structures the tension between center and periphery, where power regulates the production of meaning. However, the notion of power underlying this configuration has not always been examined. To this end, the debate on power since the 1980s is contextualized by considering Foucault, Wartenberg and Brandom. We question whether power in the semiosphere is reduced to centralized domination or whether it allows for other forms of articulation. Finally, the scope and limits of Lotman's structural semiotics are analyzed, highlighting his contribution to the understanding of power as a constitutive phenomenon of agency and social action.
