Nominalization in Indigenous Languages of Patagonia

Abstract

It is known that Mapuche reveals a series of verbal forms that are not finite (fnf) that generally function as a nucleus of subordinate propositions. There is only one type of subordinate proposition with finite verbal forms and such is the case of the subordinate conditional, marked by a hypothetical mood. In Tehuelche we have observed the presence of an fnf in –n that also acts as a nucleus of subordinate clauses. Our hypothesis is that this nominalization has been generated starting from contact with Mapuche through several centuries. This work tries to demonstrate the influence that Mapuche has exerted on Tehuelche in this aspect of its morphosyntax: the nominalization of the verbal monemes.
